AUTHOR: Jewish tradition attributes the authorship of this book to King Solomon, although this fact is disputed today.
ORIGIN OF NAME: Derived from the Latin "Song of Songs", the full name of this book in the Hebrew Bible is Song of Songs of Solomon. The more appropriate name is Song of Songs, as this song is the chief of all the Songs of Solomon [ 1Ki 4:32 - "He composed three thousand proverbs, and their songs reached a thousand and five". ].
THEME: In a poetic way, the author presents love as the fundamental principle of life. Through the deep love between a man and a woman, we can learn values for life. Cantares is a love story, which glorifies pure and natural love and focuses on the simplicity and sanctity of a person looking for his beloved. The Book of Songs is a love poem, in which the name of God is not even mentioned and there is no reference to prayer or praise to God. In this song, a maiden named Shulamith is mentioned [ Song 6:13 - "Return, return, Shulammite; return, return, that we may behold her. Why do you want to behold the Shulammite, as in the dance of Mahanaim?". ]. If she really existed, there is no way to know, because the Bible does not record anything about her in the story of Solomon. It may be that she was a woman idealized by Solomon to describe his heart's strong desire for a lovely and perfect person. The name Sulamita itself is special, as it is the feminine form of the name Solomon. The choice of this name for his beloved demonstrates that Solomon's aspiration was to find someone with whom he could identify completely, someone who would participate in his life and interests, as God expects from each of his children.
