AUTHOR: John, which in Hebrew means “God is gracious” or “God is kind”, also called by Jesus Boanerges, which means “Son of Thunder” [ Mk 3:17 ], this nickname was not by chance, because João had impetuous attitudes. John was a fisherman, brother of James and son of Zebedee and Salome [Mt 4:21]. He was always very close to Jesus, he belonged to the inner circle of Christ, which consisted of John, Peter and James, who had the exclusive right to be present at the great crises of Jesus' ministry, such as the transfiguration and the agony in Gethsemane. It was John who leaned over the Master's breast during the Paschal Supper; it was he who, when the other disciples had fled, accompanied his Lord to the judgment [John 18:15] and stood at the foot of the cross to receive the Lord's message before the atonement [John 19:25-27]. John was the only one of the apostles who died a natural death at the age of 94.
THEME: It is considered by many to be the deepest and most spiritual book in the Bible. Christ gives a fuller revelation of himself and God the Father, his attributes, his deity, and the work of the Holy Spirit. Written for the purpose of inspiring faith in Jesus Christ as the son of the living God [John 20:31].
RECIPIENTS: The Gospel was written for new Christians, non-Christians and the Hebrew people, who expected their redeeming future and needed affirmative proofs from Jesus that He was the promised Messiah of the Old Testament. So John presents these checks.
COMPILATION: It is estimated to have been written many years after the other Gospels, between AD 75 and 90. It consists of 21 chapters and 879 verses.
