AUTHOR: The authorship of the Book of Esther is unknown. Mordecai is pointed out as a possible author [Esther 9:20]. Some believe the author was Ezra, due to the Talmud attributing authorship of the Book of Esther to the "Great Synagogue".
THEME: The theme is divine providence. The word providence comes from the Latin "providentia", from "providere", and means "to look ahead" or "to prevent". The Book of Esther, like the Book of Song of Solomon, ignores the name of God, however, faith in God and his providence is patent and clear. Nor is there any reference to Jewish law or religion. There was a gap of nearly 60 years between chapters 6 and 7. During that time, Esther became queen of Persia, around 478 BC
Because of his spirit of nationalism and vindictiveness, critics have declared him unworthy of a place in the sacred canon. However, if we reverently read history, humbly depending on the Holy Spirit to teach us, we will find truths that will satisfy our minds and edify our souls.
COMPILATION: Approximately 464 / 435 BC, it consists of 10 chapters and 167 verses.
