AUTHOR: The Book is attributed, by most scholars, to Ezekiel himself. However, modern masters often challenge the unity and sole authorship of the book. Ezequiel was married, but "the desire of your eyes" was taken away from him as he carried out his mission by God's command. He has often been considered a severe, callous, impersonal, and indifferent person to his hearers, and is concerned only with the vindication of God's glory, even in the proclamation of mercy.
ORIGIN OF NAME: The author, whose name means “God strengthens”, is identified as “Ezekiel, son of Buzi the priest”.
THEMATIC: The theme of the Book is the destruction and restoration of Jerusalem. Ezekiel exercised his ministry as a prophet in Babylon, beginning 7 years before the destruction of Jerusalem and ending about 15 years later [Ez 29:17]. He received his prophetic call in 593 and prophesied between 593 and 571. Exiled at the time of the second siege of Jerusalem, he wrote to those still in Jerusalem, stating that the city and temple would be destroyed, including the removal of the presence of God, and that Egypt would be a false hope of help, as it too would be conquered by Babylon. Fulfilled prophecy, Ezekiel became the prophet of hope, announcing the restoration of Israel.
COMPILATION: Approximately 593 / 571 BC. It consists of 48 chapters and 1273 verses.
